As Freshers last October, we were surprised not to find a Law Society among the plethora of academic, sporting, and rather peculiar student societies. In our minds, the absence of a Law Department at York did not equate to the absence of a student Law Society. We felt York all students, whether studying English or Economics, Politics or Physics deserved the opportunity to be informed about Law. Therefore we began to create York’s first student run Law Society. Some warned us that we didn’t quite know what we were undertaking, and at times, we’d have to agree with them. However, this summer we have established an enthusiastic and able committee, internationally renowned sponsors and speakers, as well as all the freebies possible for our goody bags Our fundamental aim is to thoroughly prepare our members for an increasingly competitive industry. We aim to provide skills sessions and advocacy workshops, give guidance in the application process and provide our members with information about vacation placements and mini-pupilages as well as exhibit a variety of speakers to offer their advice and personal experiences. We will also act as a point of contact for any representatives wishing to contact York students. Aside from the strong academic function of the society, we aim to provide our members with outstanding social events. A large aspect of the legal world is about social networking and gaining contacts. Our Law Society aims to provide a variety of social involvement with the industry; from informal drinks with legal professionals, evening meals with our sponsors, trips to London for tours of the Inns of Court and the Inns of Court university dinners. However, we also want to encourage interaction within the society so weekly socials to Ziggy’s as well as meals out and summer balls will also be an integral part of the society. We view this as merely the first stages of the University of York Law Society. The society will inevitably expand and change with the admittance of Law undergraduates in October 2008. However, at this stage we are excited to create firm foundations for a society to cater for both non-law students, as well as the future law students, of York. We look forward to meeting you throughout the year Tamar and Emma (Founders) October 2007
